Does anyone know of a web site or forum we a person can look up, by serial number, history on a Model 98 Mauser? Thanks folks. Jun 13, 2011 - Coats of Arms and other markings on Mauser turnbolt rifles and carbines. Number codes with a letter prefix were used first, but the letter prefix.
Greetings and Merry Christmas to you all. I love gun auctions and have spent a few weekends wishing prices on good guns would stabilize and I could add to my military collection. After previewing our latest auction I told my wife I was looking at near museum quality firearms. Lucky me the Winchester collectors ran away with the auction and there were few military collectors. I have always wanted a good example of a K98 that had not been destroyed or pieced together. After making this purchase I felt I was needing the expertise of Gunboards experts. What I ended up with is a 1938 Berlin-Suhler Waffenfabrik BSW.
The serial number is #35 which is below the start and End S/N for BSW. All serial numbers match, stock is marked #35, sling is original, screw heads have not been overworked, but as a whole the firearms shows that it was not a closet queen and was used hard. That being said a strong percentage of bluing remains. My questions are, the serial number being very low, why is it not in the range of printed serial numbers other that prototypes were not included in production numbers? I know it's a nice piece as a working rifle and does anyone want to venture on value in this turbulent times.
Insurance purposes naturally. This is living history and needs to be seen. This is just one of several I will being asking questions about including a pristine Swedish Lahti, and a Luxemburg FN49 30-06 a very strong very good. Thank you for your coments. I am not sure if that would be considered low number or not. The added 'a' I believe indicates at least 10k were made before it. I could be wrong as my thinking is that production started without an alpha and the letter was added once 9999 was reached.

As stated about the '3' on the bolt SN is different than the rest of the 3's. Just my thoughts. Is there a 'B' stamped between the eagles on the trigger guard in front of the floorplate?
If I am incorrect I am sure someone correct the info. Finestkind Last edited by finestkind; at 08:10 PM. That's why I asked gunboards, it looks ok to someone that doesn't know what he is looking for as does 99% of the buying public. Aside from obvious rework, it's still history and still has stories to tell and I am sure going to tell them as long as I know what they really are. The collector had these in his possession for over 50 years so questionable practices happened when there were only worth $10.00.
Still the basic rifle has a serial number of 35 and I haven't heard how that has been reworked, but again it doesn't' show in BSW Serial number table. Maybe the story here is a lot more interesting than I thought. Thanks for your input. Your basic misunderstanding of German serial numbers is causing some confusion for you.
Every maker started at #1 and worked their way to 9999. At serial 9999, the numbering started over at 1 and a letter suffix was added. Letter suffix denotes a block of 10,000 guns.
So, as stated yours would be # 10,035 for 1938 production and is not really a 'low number' gun. As to the bolt, it doesn't look like original WW2 and not original to the gun. Did someone renumber it when the gun was worth $10? Certainly happened a lot, as $10 was not then what $10 is now and value wise it was worth more if it matched, even then.
Lastly, the wrist shows a non-factory marking which more experienced collectors can identify as a rework marking (it's a Nazi style eagle stamped over other markings). That marking (from what I see I'm 99% sure) is from Magdeburg, a facility that reworked 98k's when they became damaged or worn. I know your next question will be ' Maybe they did the bolt?'
